Japanese transport company sets a world record in autonomous sailing


Mitsui O.S.K. Lines completed a successful sea trial of autonomous sailing in frames of Nippon Foundation’s MEGURI2040 unmanned ship project, using a large commercial coastal car ferry. The voyage took a route from the Tomakomai Port, Hokkaido Prefecture to the Oarai Port, Ibaraki Prefecture. This test covered a commercial route of the ferry Sunflower Shiretoko, 750 km, becoming the world’s longest distance for autonomous sailing and a world record.
